Preparing Local Young People to Enter the Workplace: OneRichmond and MKH Search Collaborate on Work Ready – Future Ready Programme

Last week, the first cohort of our Work Ready – Future Ready programme, developed in collaboration with MKH Search, culminated with an in-person workshop day in the City.

Last week, four young people from our borough attended a workshop day in the City with top recruitment company MKH Search as part of our Work Ready – Future Ready pilot programme. Over the past few months, they have been working with recruitment specialists, lead by Damien Nicholls, to develop their confidence and skillset and support their first steps into their chosen careers.

Job hunting can be a daunting and demoralising task, particularly for young people who have recently graduated school or university. The London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames has one of the fastest growing unemployment rates in the capital, and as competition for work grows, young people who are already facing challenges – such as additional caring responsibilities, access requirements, or coming from low income backgrounds – are often hardest hit. OneRichmond’s Work Ready – Future Ready programme was developed with MKH Search and their director Joshua Moench to support these young people in particular, and give them the chance to thrive in whatever field they aspire to enter.

Our first cohort were referred to us by local charities who recognised their potential, and the barriers that are making it more difficult for them to start their careers. They have been receiving bespoke guidance and career support from recruitment professionals at MKH Search, tailored to their own fields of interest. Two programme participants have already begun to receive job offers thanks to the support they received on the programme.

At the in-person workshop they had a chance to meet recruitment professionals in-person, gaining insight into interview technique and networking advice. They discussed where to look for jobs, how to tailor a CV and cover letter, and how to turn rejection or disinterest into meaningful feedback or even a job offer. We are looking forward to following their journeys, supported by MKH Search, as they put what they have learned into practise.

The Work Ready – Future Ready pilot programme is just the beginning; OneRichmond look forward to opening up the programme to a new cohort as we enter 2027, as well as providing long-term support for those who took part in this year’s programme.
